polip extension

On my SPS im not getting very good polip extension when the lights are on. If I look at my tank at night there all extended. Only about 30% are extended during the day, I dont understand why. Im still getting great growth from ALL my corals. Can anyone help me out?

It could be too much light maybe? I've notice that with some of my sps that I have really high up in my tank with a 400w MH blasting it. When I moved it, it started to look better. What kind of lighting do you have and where are your sps places?

If they're extending more at night, it seems pretty directly related to the amount of light they are getting (unless there is some food added at night enticing them to extend more).

Honestly, if you're getting good growth I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

None of the fish touch them, I have a 250w 14k phoenix bulb. They are placed all over the tank. I have 30+ different sps. Some are frags, mini colonies, and colonies

Alk is at 12 and I feed during the day. about 30% of them stay out during the day

No idea Eddy. I'm battling the same thing except I know its by Flame angel that is the cause.

Hmmm I have a rusty angel but the only thing he messes with is my clowns, he don't like them swimming around he makes them stay at the bottom of the tank

I've only seen my flame pick on the corals once or twice, but it was like the day after I put him in the tank, all my SPS was retracted. No other additions or substractions since then.

Did you recently upgrade your lighting or replace bulbs? That will do it.

that might be it. 84 is a little high for my taste. I have my tank at 78 day and night. But thats a 6 degree temp swing as well. Too much IMO

84 is high, but it wouldnt be that bad if you didnt have that much of a swing. try to keep your temp swing under 2 or 3 degrees at worst.

I agree that the big swing may be the major player in this ordeal but I also thing 84 degrees for SPS is a bit high as well. SPS are already delicate and from what I understand they do best with temps around 77-78 with all params stable including temps. Although I could be wrong. :confused2:

A chiller is out of the question, so I will go pick up a fan today and place it on my sump. Now the next question is should I put the fan on a timer and only have it run when my lights are on?

Yes, or if you can... only when the temps get to a certain level.
