Pool pumps

Just wondering who uses them. Are they safe to use? I am just trying to figure out basic info. Now that I have a house and a fish room I am looking to gradually build myself a nice little sump room. I only have my 55 at the moment, but I intend on expanding to a 55, 92, and something big. 170-220 range at some point. I was wondering what pumps people use to push water up that kind of head pressure. I have heard of people using pool pumps, just want to know if its safe, what to look for etc. I would love to get a good size pump i could run on a VFD so I can dial back my power usage. As I get closer to actually doing this I would love to see some of your basement sump room setups in person to gather ideas.

Problem there might be corrosion - stainless steel is fine in freshwater but deteriorates in SW in no time...

Kinda thought it wasn't the best of ideas. What big pumps do people use for these applications?

Pressure-rated pumps. They are a necessity when trying to keep large volume with longer pipe runs.

Oh I see... the house 500 meters from the lake just isnt good enough... pfft...

Misu Corrosion in pool = no biggie corrosion in my tanks sounds like a disaster. Not to mention pump failure = very very bad. Tank health and reliability are heavily weighted here. Do you know if it is a special pump for salt water pool though? Perhaps there is an option there.

Robb, Yeah, i need to for sure. How big is that pump you have, and when will you be breaking that sucker down?

Pfft nope, I want an enclosed indoor salwater pool so I can swim around and play with our fish!

Thanks Robb! Thats actually not as bad price wise as I had thought. I can't wait till I get to start this project. Unfortunately it will most likely be a slow process, but I will take leads from you and Andy and snag good deals when they come around.

Misu: the salinity in your pool is absurdly low; nothing like a reef tank.

Kayak: Reeflo pumps are the best for this application. Dial it back and you use less energy. My hammerhead has been running for 7-8 years straight now.

Pool pumps generally use a ton of power, are loud and can also have exposed copper parts.

I was wondering about the copper part. I didn't think it would be a great idea to begin with, but I had to ask. I know some people are using them just thought I would make sure. On the other hand the large pressure pumps are not quite as expensive as I had thought, actually comparable to pool pumps. Thanks guys.

I would still like to know what other pumps people are using for this application.

Reeflos are the best IMO, quiet, efficient, and very reliable. I have been running reeflo pumps for years.

Iwaki, Pan World, and Dolphins are good. But the usually run hotter, use more energy, and are louder.
