there is a strange popping noise coming from inside the tank i dont have a pistol shrimp and its not any pumps cause when i turn them off the the popping is still there. anybody have an idea what it could be?

At night cut off the neck of a coke bottle and invert it in making a trap. Put a chunk of fresh clam in there to lure it in

probably a hitchhiker pistol shrimp. If it sounds like someone bouncing a quarter off the glass then its a pistol shrimp

If it's a single pop it's likely a pistol. If it's rapid-fire clicking it's likely a mantis.

The trap suggested above is a good way to catch him. He needs to go.

I've yet to catch my mantis, I've never seen him, I'm sure it's a mantis cause I have multiple taps going on after dark. I lose a hermit almost every night. It's funny cause I'll hear the noise and I'll sneak up on the tank with a flash light hoping to catch a glimpse of him but he out smarts me everytime. I need to take some pics for you guys cause it's funny to watch the hermits cause at night they all run to the same corner and hide out together cause they know he's coming. I also had one hermit sleep in a finger leather for 3 days. He was to scared to come down. I need to set up another tank and start taking out rocks until I find him. The coke bottle didn't work for me, maybe the hermits could hide in there lol. :confused2:

i dont think it is a mantis cause i havent had a problem with losing any fish crabs or snails. and the rock i have in the is solid no holes bigger than an end of a straw.

My clowns make a popping noise at night after lights go out...read up on it.

I think a single pop is more likely to be a pistol.

As for mantis, I had one in my seahorse tank for 3 years. Heard it every morning and every night. It never did any harm and I never actually saw it but I heard it every day for a few years and then it stopped one day (creature died?)

I tried to find it to no avail. I don't recommend leaving one in the tank but in this instance the tank was heavily fed (seahorses) and it must have thrived on "leftovers" and did not need to prey on the ponies.

I had that problem, drove me nuts....... Turned out to be the heater tapping the side of the tank

it doesnt seem to be the clowns usually they are not near the noise and it sounds like someones ankle popping.dont know if that helps any.
