Power outages?

If you just want a small generator to run the tank I would recommend a Honda. I have the eu2000i and it will power the tank and a few things in the house no problem. They are expensive but I've had mine for almost 10 years and it still runs like new.

How long can my fish go without power?

There isn't an easy answer to this question since there are so many variables. The fish need oxygen and the temperature can't swing too much. The amount of oxygen used up over time would depend on the size of the tank and how many fish you have. The more fish you have and the smaller the tank the quicker the oxygen is used up. The loss of heat in winter or the loss of cooling in summer would vary so there is no one answer to that either.

It also depends on what mitigating factors you have. If you have a battery powered air pump to provide some movement of water and oxygen or battery powered powerheads like Vortechs then they could last longer than a tank without these. You can also take steps to mitigate the temperature swings as well that would increase the time.

Edit: whatever you do DO NOT go into home depot and ask or fill out a form for a quote for generators. they brought in a new service provider from north carolina that takes 2 weeks or more to get to you and their prices are any where from 30% to 100% higher than what we were getting.

+1 I know someone else who sells another brand. :-) There are lots of options available. It really boils down to what you want to keep running, how much you want to pay and do you have natural gas available.

We sell a lot of tri-fuel generators. They will run on Natural Gas, Propane or Gasoline. Natural gas is the is the preferred option because you never have to refill it. The one drawback is in a major emergency, the provider may cut the gas service to an area to avoid potential fires due to damaged structures. If that were to happen, you can change over to one of the other two fuel supplies.

+ 1 on the house and tank. I just purchased a Honda eu2000i great quiet generator. All i needed was to run my tank pump , T5's , TV and frig.

+1 on the honda EU2000. Great little unit and super quiet! (loud noises attract zombies). If you don't start off all of a sudden it will even handle a reciprocating saw! If you wanna spend a little less the cheapies at harbor freight work as well as any little made in china gas engines. Check craigs list or go to a big car show/parts swap, there are always some there. They are "honda clones" most of the time.
