Proper flow

I have a 29 biocube that has been set up for a few months and I can't find the best way to place the power heads to eliminate all the dead spots. Its to the point that it is starting to get red slime bacteria. Please give me some input on your biocube and what has worked for you. Thanks

I've seen several people place them on the back of the biocube, and point them forward. With the round front glass, the reflection of the water normally bounces back throughout the tank...

Yes. But where on the back. I hve 2 on the back wall both sides pointing towards the front center. Best I can get for now

cut out every other fin on the power heads cover to increase flow

I don't know if lack of flow is the issue. I have an 8 and 29 gallon biocubes both of which rely on the stock pump solely for flow. I prefer more in the 29, but the wp-25 is way too strong even dialed down so it's been off for weeks with no issues.

I had some issues with cyano in the 8g that cleared up with water changes

Edit: And btw that does not look like Cyanobacteria. It looks like diatom bloom. What sand did you use

My bad!..lol you can increase flow if you cut every other fin out of those powerheads ,though...

Heath. There is almost too much flow now for the soft coral. Just cant find the sweet spot to get rid of the dead areas of the tank

Edit: If it is diatom, which I'm rather positive that it is, increasing the flow will not help.

The problem would be that you have too much food for diatom algae, aka silicates.

Silicates come from either your sand or your water. Basically you just wait for the diatoms to
Eat it all and then they die if it is in your sand. With a brand like caribsea I doubt it will last long. (This is why we don't use cheap sand from Home Depot). The other option is that you are adding silicates in with you water changes or the initial fill. You might need new filters for your RODI. (Assuming you are using one)

Either way, it's in the water now, and water change with good filtered RODI water will help.

Edit: Also, if its Cyanobacteria, water changes with good filtered RODI should help.

Solution: water changes.

Ill give it a try. But I still get alot of build up at the back corners of the tank. Black looking stuff. Fish crap maybe??

Idk detritus is normally not black. That's a separate issue altogether. I put 100 Astraea snails and 10 hermit crabs (some blue, some red, and a couple white) in my 29 and I don't have any issues. In fact I just put 10 HA covered frags in yesterday and now they are spotless white

Maybe I'll try more snails and something that sifts the sand to see if it helps. Ill get back to you in a few days

For my flow in my 29 bio I use the spinning return head on the circulation pump and 1 hydor 500, I only have 3 fish in the tank... (8" blonde naso, 4" yellow tang, and 5" regal tang.... HA HA HA Just kidding... I really have 1 maroon clown, purple firefish, and yellow belly damsel. I sometimes over feed these 3 little guys and once I do I get diatom outbreaks. Weekly water changes helps keep things to a minimum...

Chemipure elite(change this evey month)
Brs carbon in small bag

One more thing I run is phosguard... you could do a little sand sifter and it will help some too... I just don't think its a flow issue because if its there it will present itself some other way...
