Are rinsed out propylene glycol drums safe to use for ro/di water and mixing salt?

I would assume the plastic composite used is very dense called to avoid absorption but that is a wild guess on my part.

They are the blue plastic drums. I was just wondering because I just started up a propylene glycol secondary cooling system and have 18 empty drums. Hate to chunk them all in the dumpster.

I am sure they would be fine. If I had a place for them I would get two off you. Remind me to tell you about the "shaker" I did the refrigeration for back in the days when the army was developing GPS units to deploy in the field. From -40F to +250F in 5 minutes. :-). Pretty cool machines.

Thanks Rich. I just read up on propylene glycol and it is considered safe for human consumption and dog consumption except In extremely large quantities. So I would think any residual that may be absorbed in the barrels should be harmless.

I wouldn't have a problem using them. Especially what the MSDS sheet says

"Propylene glycol is an approved food additive for dog food under the category of animal feed and is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generally_recognized_as_safe">generally recognized as safe</a> for dogs,[IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol#cite_note-30">[30]</a> with LD50 = 9 mL/kg. That said, the figure is higher for most laboratory animals (LD50 at levels of 20mL/kg).[IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol#cite_note-31">[31]</a> Similarly, propylene glycol is an approved food additive for human food as well.[IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol#cite_note-32">[32]</a> The exception is that it is prohibited for use in food for cats due to links to [IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heinz_body">Heinz body</a> [IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anemia">anemia</a>.[IMG]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propylene_glycol#cite_note-33">[33]</a>"

</em>I knew someone who used one as primary fermentor for wine making. They finally got rid of it because it was hard to clean.
