Protein Skimmer for 90 Gallon

Holy smokes...those ATB skimmers are exxxxxxpensive!

Which model did you have Deitz, and did it perform, like you'd expect a thousand dollar plus skimmer would perform?

Dale, I've got a Reef Octopus NWB 110 I'm running on my 45gal cube, and I'm real happy with the performance. It's rated for a 100gal, but you might need to up-size for your 90gal though.

Ah ok i can see where i came off as insulting with my comments about those, didn't mean to, sorry about that pfcdeitz. One of the first articles i read was that skimmer article that compared expensive vs cheaper skimmers and the cheaper ones outperformed the more expensive ones so in my head I have a hard time justifying the expensive ones. I am probably downplaying the importance of a good skimmer.

My next skimmer will be an upgrade so I will have some data to back up any preconceived notions i might have had. I will probably find out that a nice skimmer is invaluable to this hobby and start saving for an ATB Again sorry if I came off rude pfc, you are lucky to be able to afford one of the nicer pieces of equipment in this hobby.

A good skimmer IS invaluable in this hobby.

The problem is defining what 'good' means.

I'm not looking to start a 'my skimmers great and yours sucks debate', so let's just say that many will do the job (and always oversize).

Ok ich, so the question that is probably more relevant, are there any that WON'T do the job, if so what are they? What should i steer clear of?

I believe one of my Reef Oct 150's cost me under 200$ New
It works great on my 75 with a 20 gal sump. ( and it's packed from wall to wall with coral) I bet it would be just fine on a 90gal

Unusual designs, unknown brand and small skimmers always give reason to pause.

I love my Reef Dynamics INS 100 protein skimmer. I have it with my 60 gallon and it works miracles. I bought mine used, it looks like new they are a little more than $300. They also sell them at Creation but I am not sure the price.

Edit: They also have an INS80 that is rated for up to 250 gallons, that is priced right at $300.

I have a brand new Reef Octopus BH 2000 hang on back protein skimmer for sale. I bought it this week to hang on my sump/refugium under my 75g tank, but I miscalculated the demensions and it is an inch too tall and hits the bottom of my tank so it has not been used in my tank. Since it has been opened BRS won't take it back. My mistake can be your gain. It is rated for a 125g tank and sells for $220. I will sell it for $200 and you can pick it up. Reef Octopus SRO 1000

Keep in mind a skimmer is ALL ABOUT THE PUMP. Pretty acrylic work is nice, but the pump makes the skimmer. And the bubble blaster line that comes with the SRO is just a monster at that price point.
