Is purigen a type of GFO? is one better than the other if they're different. I am going to order the dual reactor from bulk reef supply. I have a lot of purigen on hand but was wondering if I should order some of their GFO product as well.

Also, whats better? Granules? Pellets? For a 90, how fast do I go through this stuff....should I buy 1b. 2lb, etc?

thanks.

I have used purigin and like it, but have heard some say otherwise.

You would not use purigin in a reactor. (as far as I know, I've not seen it done)

Purigen does not remove phosphates. Purigen is more like carbon and traps chemicals and organic matter where as Granular Feric Oxide is for removing phosphates. They do not perform the same action.

If your looking to remove phosphates, use PhosGuard. Purigen will maintain, but not neccessarily lower your NO3's.

So is phosgaurd pretty good stuff? I use purigen in my Solana to maintain phosphates but I am needing something to help remove it from my mom's new Red Sea. As of right now I am not running anything in it while it is cycling.

It is very good stuff. It was recommended to me by Amanda at Creation Reef and it works very well. It will absorb any phosphates you might have or maintain the tank if you have none. You can get it in a pouch that works well.

so is phosguard the same as the GFO from BUlk Reef Supply? Would you use both purigen and phosguard/GFO at the same time? I've used purigen for a while now and I love how clear it makes my water.

sorry meant to add the +1...They are different, but just adding my experiance.

No, I doubt phosguard and GFO are the same.

The bulk reef stuff is straight up GFO. I'm bettin the Phosguard is a proprietary mix of various things.

Phosguard is seachem's stuff isnt' it? I'm lazy and don't feel like looking it up but I believe its the white granule stuff that seachem makes. It's alum based instead of iron based which is what GFO is.

GFO is more effective than phosguard imo at removing phosphates but GFO is also dangerous to a tank... I won't use the stuff again as I lost a ton of SPS one time and attribute it to overdosing GFO.

PhosGuard is Seachems stuff as well as Purigen. I use both in my tank. It is the small granular stuff you are thinking.

Hmmm....thats not good. Ok, so if I use phosguard then is that you use in a reactor? My plan was to put Carbon on one side and a phosphate remover in the other.

Seachem makes a product called SeaGel, it is half carbon half Phosguard. :)

hmmm...so if i use this sea gel stuff do i not need a dual chamber reactor? and is it as effective? It's also kind of pricey depending on how long it lasts.

nothing beats GFO at removing phosphates, however, since it's so good, you have to acclimate you creatures over a 2 month period. i've been using it for a few years now, without issue. I recommend you start using it BEFORE you have sps colonies.

what seems to cause the demise of sps coloinies is the lower amount of phosphates so quickly that it causes the stonies to die. This might have to do with the "algae" in the corals.

anyway,
