I bought some purple up to put in my reef tank to help the coralline algae some help, when i put it in my tank, it gets murky. The purple up is creamy like milk. Is this normal stuff or did i get a batch filled with creamer?

Nope thats how the stuff is, but for it to work well you must have a small amount of coralline in your tank already.

i have rocks that have partial coverage and i keep my calcium at 400-480. I think my lights are to bright, because when i had just power compacts i had more coralline algae..

Purple up is not needed. I assume you bought of to increase your coraline growth, but it won't help any and in some case makes problems.

Proper water parameters and time is the only way it will grow.

Waste of money as it isn't soluble!

yeah its a gimick(sp?) it is true that coraline does better in dimmer situations according to Charlie. I couldn't get much growth untill I got my mag levels in check. My calcium levels were fine around yours, but my mag was around 1000. 1350 is target for it, after I got the mag up it took off. Mag is a big factor like MvM mentioned. It really is a waste of money and thats fact not My Opinion.

I am not sure the lights are the problem. I had 1500 watts of light on a 156 gallon and could not keep the Coraline off the glass. Mag is where it is at!

I agree! I had 1600 watts on my 190 not counting the 6 panorama modules... I had to scrape coraline twice a week off the front glass.

its just calcium, nothing more.

Use it for dosing and dont bother buying it again.

Can I ask a related question? My LFS tested my mag and said it was boarder line low yet I am getting a lot of coraline growth on the back wall of my tank. That doesn't seem to match up with what I am reading here. Any ideas?

What is borderline low and what do you consider a lot of growth? No one said that you have to dose Mag to grow coraline just that maintaining your Mag aids in Coraline growth Perhaps the reason your Mag is borderline low it that the coraline you have, utilized it. Your lawn grows and stays green because of the fertilizer it used ,not the fertilizer lying on the ground. Your low Mag and the presence of coraline leans the evidence in favor of what you are reading here.:)

Thanks Grouper. That is exactly why I asked the question. Wasn't doubting the info here just trying to understand it and now, that makes a lot more sense to me. :-) Now, the dreaded follow up question..... been debating letting it grow on the back of the tank since I didn't paint it or add a background. Will the coraline growth continue to deplete my mag levels those making it more difficult for corals to utilize the calcium? I now I can dose for mag (as long as I test for it first) but would getting rid of what is growing on the tank help in your opinion? (so nice have a bunch of experts so willing to help a newbie out). :-)

Edit: Really need to spell check before I hit "Post". LOL
