My dilemma:
I'm using 1/2" pvc for my return plumbing but my Hydor In-Line heater only connects with 3/4" hose

Question:
How many pvc fittings will I need to go from 1/2" pvc to a hose? Is there such thing as a 1/2" slip to 3/4" hose barb fitting, or will i need a series of couplings, adapters, and bushings?

Sidebar Rant:
I've heard nothing but good things about the hydor in-line heater, but I don't care for the fact that a machine is now part of my plumbing line. If it fails, I cant run my system unless I have an equally sized hose to fill the gap. No bueno

you can always get a powerhead and just let it run from and back into the sump

thank you. That was the first option I considered once I realized that I couldn't use a submersible heater. I'm trying to limit heat, noise, and power consumption - I figured running everything off one pump was the answer

actually you can also use a couple of unions and valves and just make a by pass so if it fails you can just take it out and use the bypass line, that way you wouldnt need another pump....

why cant you use a submersible?

I went to home depot and bought a 1/2" to 3/4 reducer and then a hose barb to go on the end.. So just two little pieces worked for me.. There were fitting in nylon and one was PVC. Just make sure to look in the nylon section too cause i believe the hose barb I bought was nylon..

to answer you're original question..

a 1/2" to 3/4" bushing
into
a slip/threaded 3/4" coupler
into
your barb fitting
into
your heater
into
your barb fitting
into
a slip/threaded 3/4" coupler
into
a 1/2" to 3/4" bushing
into
your return line..

they also make barb fittings (sold at lowes) that transition from 1/2" to 3/4" all in nylon tubing..

there are about 4 or 5 different ways to configure what you want to do..
