simple question, if i start up a rubber maid container with heater and ac50 filter. Dose with ammonia and cycle (or part cycle) the tank, when I find the right 20 gallon tank moving the filtration and heater over should it stay cycled and ready for fish?

Not really. The bulk of your aerobic bacteria will live in the sand and/or rock. The filter will house some but not the quantity you would need. Now, if you also put rock and sand into the rubber maid you might be closer to achieving what you're after.

Regardless, I can't say enough about how it's better to take it as slow as possible. Creating a complete and balanced fully contained ecosystem can be tricky. If you're just doing fish and no corals you have a lot less to worry about. DO NOT add all the fish at once no matter what. I wouldn't do more than one or two at a time with a tank that small. And space adding them out to once a month or more.

+1.

Article I wrote about quarantine, http://www.imagine-ocean.com/best-practices-quarantine-procedures-obtaining-new-fish-specimens/">HERE</a>.

I like using Seachem Matrix as a biological medium, especially in QT tanks but we've used it in all kinds of systems.

I agree with taking your time, but the article also contains "emergency QT" information. While not ideal, it can be done.

So I went with a 20g long with an AC50 filter with foam and mesh bag of matrix. I do have a small amount of LR and LS to help cycle the tank. they are in a long shallow tupperware so I can remove if I need to medicate.

Are there any good cycling articles out there.

I dosed ammonia and after being maybe a little to high there is now no ammonia and Nitrites and trates are off the charts. I have dosed a small amount ammonia again to make sure their is a source of ammonia. Does it sound like im on the right path? I have not cycled saltware before.
