Question - Film on top of water

Hey everyone,

Quick question. Over the last week or so one of my tanks has a "oily" type of film on the top that seems to have either salt or sand pieces in at. It floats on the top of the water almost as if it were an oil based film and does not cover the whole surface area.

My two tanks, are tied together as can be seen in the picture below. Both tanks drain into two separate fuges and then drain into the same sump and back up into each tank. One complete system.

This film however only exists on the surface of the water in the left hand tank. I recently had a die of a flower pot coral. I am not sure if that may be what caused this. It has not seemed to effect anything, but I just did a water change and it still exists. Until recently I have never had this. I did notice that in my water change container there is some "crud" etc. This may be the cause as well, but It does not make sense why it would only be in one tank. I did notice a few days ago that it did disappear, but it is now back again.

Maybe there is not enough surface agitation. I have a diamond goby sandsifter that really stirs things up in there and maybe some of the sand is being trapped on the surface. I also have been feeding PE mysis shrimp heavier than normal and wasn't sure if there was something oily in it.

Bottom line, I have not changed anything in my routine or setup and was wondering if anyone has any experience with this. At this point it is simply an eyesore for me when I open the canopy, but I wanted to check as it is driving me a little crazy.

The pics I attached are of the setup and then one looking up at the water line so you may possibly see what I am talking about. I haven't posted in a while so I figured I would see what some of the vets think about this. Thanks for any advice.

I love your setup.

To answer your question. I would increase you surface agitation and see what happens. I notice a film if the surface is to still.

it's basically a thin layer of proteins where dust and other particles get stuck - it prevents proper gas exchanmge so it should be removed, usually done with a surface skimmer or overflow box

If it is protein, do you think it is due to some recent overfeeding?

Absolutely - just scoop it out or direct flow at it to make it get sucked into the overflow

Mark, very nice setup!! I too have noticed the same thing from time to time. When I notice this on my setup, I point a powerhead to the top and then will almost always notice heavier than normal skimate the next day or two.

I have the same thing on my tank and appreciate the feedback regarding surface agitation.
