A well know reefer from uga was at my house and told me. If your running a roller mat theres no need for a protein skimmer.Any thoughts on this?

I would disagree, they do different things. The roller mat takes the place of a filter sock. Not sure using a filter sock negates the need for a protein skimmer.

With the roller mat in place, is your skimmer still pulling stuff out...then you have your answer.

Gas exchange, the #1 reason to use a skimmer imho.

Example:
You can run a fish-less system and a skimmer will still provide gas exchange, which is an essential role that no roller mat will do.

Two totally different types of filtration, roller mats are just like a filter pads pulling out free floating debris depending on your micron size, skimmer breaks down the nasties in the water and removing them in the form of nasty skimmate and aids in gas exchange with microbubbles.
