I just setup a new system, how long should the light be one when you first setup a tank.

Unless you have occupants you really don't need the light on for the tank to cycle. It might promote some nuisance algae to grow also. There are smarter experts on the subject out there that I am sure will give their 2 cents...I only can give 1 cent.
