So my system volume is apprx 300 gallons and i have began to stock more fish and my sensitive corals are begginin to show signs of stress. i currently run an mrc mr1 in sump and i think its begging to lag. i also have an mr3r that i hooked up for about 5 minutes before removing it because it sounded like a jet plane. Unfortunately, my system is in a loft so all rooms are open and connected and i hate having a roaring ocean in my house. does anyone have any ideas on a silent yet efficient skimmer? it can be out of sump but needs to not pound my roof down. a good friend reccomended the mrc reeflo orca but i cant find any real feedback on them and also i currently have a dart pump on my system like the orca and its a little too loud as well. any input would be greatly appreciated...

PM Skirz he works at MRC. They are great skimmers! I want one just can't justify the $$$.

The new Orca Pro's are equipped with the dart gold pump, which is vitually silent.

Jmaneyapanda has a Pro II; you may want to ask him how he's liking his skimmer.

MRC is great. Also check out the Reeflow Orca skimmers.

wow, the responses are unbeleivably quick with this club. glad to be a part. the reeflo is the direction im headed. jus havin a hardtime breakin out the checkbook haha. and i have a dart i bought new for my return running now that sounds like a jacuzzi pump. im goin to do away with it. is the dart on the orca quiter?

In my experience yes. I believe it's because of the difference in the actual pump mechanism - the skimmers use a needlewheel pump, which breaks up the water and induces cavitation, and seems to be quieter. It's not silent, but it's less noise than a standard Dart. At least it was quieter than the one I had.

Big skimmers are expensive. So are the corals it supports.... There's a lot of places you can skimp, but the skimmer really isn't it.
