To all whom want to listen...

I am saddened by the death of my BTA Nem. She finally did not make it. Here are some picks...

Here the NEM is looking for darkness... after it looked bad, starts to somewhat look better, but it really is sick.

Also, some tips for those out there trying to raise anemones...

1. Don't buy a Nem that is not attached to anything at the LFS. If it's attached to a rock... buy the rock. It's very likely that it was torn when it was taken out of their original habitat...but you; conveniently, will not notice until it's in your tank. When NEMs propagate, they'll look and act healthy because they will look for lights and eat.

2. If the nem does not react to the LFS person handling it... don't buy it...the reaction is either a retraction of the tentacles, a pouching of itself, etc. This also happens quick... not when it's in your custody 30 minutes later. If this is the case... such NEM is sick and you should not buy it.

3. If when you touch it, it does not feel sticky or it does not sting you in some way...it'll be really hard to feed and will possibly die. Don't buy it.

4. If in your tank... wanders about and looks for a dark place, it's dying...either put it in a separate tank, or be ready for it to die.

5. If you can see a blue-cheese type substance at the bottom of it, it probably is torn and hurt...it will die soon.

6. The NEM will probably look good but it maybe hurt even at the LFS. Following these tips will increase the chance of survival.

7. Get you a NEM that is adult. something subtantially bigger then 2-3 inches. If it's too young, it probably won't make it as NEMs really dislike and react negatively to being transported.

8. Look at their mouths... see if they eat well and whether their mouth is not all out open, but gently closed and sharply defined. If it's not the case, it's probably sick and won't be able to eat well and starve in your tank. If it looks like this (DON'T BUY IT).

9. If there is a warranty attached to the NEM when you buy it... look for warranties that are 2 weeks or more...NEMs metabolism is so sloooooow that you won't notice a visual change until it's already too late.

10. If you know of any data that could be inclomplete or incorrect with my present experience, please post it and let me know. I want to learn more as I'd like to own one with better success than then one that just left me.

:lol2:
_All the best!!!

You'd be surprised what a nem can come back from....I'd put it in a place where the clowns can't get to it....make sure your water parms are good and give it gentle flow. I've had nems bounce back from all sorts of disasters. A separate holding tank would be best in case it does in fact fully die (it'll turn to complete mush) that way your disp doesn't get any ammonia spike.

Don't give on it yet- unless it's already mush-
I've had one come back from something terrible!! And one that didn't- and it didn't look like that at all when we finally decided to pull it from the tank.

But if it is dead- it's not starting out to be a good day in the land of coral...
And I'm sorry for your loss.

No it'll be a BADDDDD stink...It's going to have a smell to it naturally. I think it may turn around if you have a tank to put it in so it's away from all irritants. It honestly doesn't look "that" bad.

when our first one died, u could open the door to our apartment and gag!! It was terrible- and it was still in our tank!! That was an uneducated purchase helped along by out lfs at the time.

Well...

I put her in seclution... she still died...and now she's really dead. It's totally gone. What a waste.

WHAT EVER I DID WRONG PEOPLE!!!!???!!!!!

I watch my water parameters closely and still this happened.

N E Way/

I'll try it again, but not now. It was just shocking.

Thanks for all the kind words.

Daniel, what lights did you end up putting on your tank? I don't think lighting would cause a rapid decline but it might not have been happy if your lights were not up to spec.

I have 8*55 watts T5s 4actinic and 4 full spectrum with 4 moon lights 48". (Now I am looking for a 24" because I am setting up a refugium).

sorry bout your anemone. thats sad. is it better to have airflow on an anemone or just let it pick a place?

I placed it on a rock and it stayed there for about 3 days... then it started to look for other places around the tank, until it found a place away from the lights...

so what do it mean if when lights are on the anemone is large and looks healthy but when turn lights on it closes up and almost completely shuts?

I think that the anemone needs lots of light, but they need their sting poison to process the light...I think the name of it is zooxanthellae. When they can't process the light it irritates them or something and that's why they look for darkness...this is the same substance that allows them to acquire and digest food...if they are low or out of it, then they will starve to death.

Hope this helps,

_D.
