RAnco Temp Controller: Defective or Faulty Wiring?

Today, I was messing with my powerhead and I touched the surface of the water, I shocked me. So I tried to isolate the problem by disconnecting the pumps, heaters, and powerhead. The problem is my ranco temp controller. For some reason whenever the temperature probe is in the water, it would leak current into my tank. This controller arrived bare, so I had to wire it myself. I attached a power strip to it to plug in the fans. My wiring looks correct but I'm not sure. Does anyone ever experience this with a Ranco controller? Is there a solution?

use a ground wire and it shouldnt "leak" voltage...

The temp sensor is a low voltage device around 24 volts if I remember correctly so that should be the most it could leak. The controller may not be the problem ,it may be that it is acting as the ground . One way to check it is to remove the temp probe and replace it with a grounding probe and then check the other devices.

I think there is something wrong with the ground in my house. I bought a grounding probe for my tank, but it made my the problem worse, so I didn't use it.

Most of the time when stray voltage leaks into a tank it comes from weak grounds on that devise, the plug your using, or the power strip. I've gota a few outlets that don't have grounds on them that do have a bit of the same problem. what is the temp. prob made from? gota pic? or model number. i've use ranco controls in the past just not for my tank.

I'm not suggesting to use the probe full time just as a method of testing the other devices and isolating the ranco.

Ranco probes are not intended, designed, or indicated to be submersed. There is a clear vial that they are supposed to go it.
