as the title says - I am replumbing my entire system in a couple weeks, any words of advice? check valves? unions? Filter sock vs bubble trap?

I would like to remove the filter sock completely from the system...

Unions are a must, ball valves, tee the drain (one to fuge with ball valve and the other to ps section. And dont forget the unions.

check vales are a good thing as long as you get quality ones, just dont rely on them fully. And running a ballb valve bypass is a good idea as well if you need to drain it for some reason(cleaning the valve)

Add unions everywhere you think there is even a possibility of needing to take something apart.

Fitler socks should only be used only for a short time or should be changed every 2-3 days.

Bubble traps rarely work well unless its a baffel in the sump. But there are a few tricks to making the drain quieter.

other then that, just draw it out...a few times before you start.

Go to home depot and "assemble" the ENTIRE system first! If you want a good check valve, BRS has them with unions so you can keep them clean. Not cheap, but they're the best I've found!

Draw it all out "on paper" and then in MS Paint. Post that here for people to comment and make suggestions against. That's what I would do.

Thanks guys - i have a BRS order about to be placed for some plumbing and new loc line. My neighbor is a professional commercial plumber (also has a 600 gallon system) so he is doing all the work for me - i have to make all the decisions though!! Fish Scales is gonna help me build my sump this weekend form a 40 breeder

my set up is basically going to follow this diagram - i just need to fugure out where my gfo/carbon reactor and uv will go. My skimmer section will be much larger, the fuge will be smaller due to the skimemr size

I am sparing no expense on plumbing - already have over $100 in parts in my BRS cart!!

here are the basic plans - not a very good job I did but you get the idea. the skimmer is going to take up almost half the sump so it leaves me little room for fuge but i will figure out a way to make it work. not going external with the skimmer - maybe fuge but only as last resort - i have no room left under the cabinet

I am not sure my placement of UV and GFO is coming in and out of the right spots though

The pump is already in service as my return, could be a 12. Head is about 5 ft. Yes 2 overflows. Ball valves will be there

On my bb (and driving) so I will elaborate when I get home. I have about 12" above sump

I am not sure yet - as much as possible but it will be tight, prob 20% of the sump at most. I think I am going the ball o' chaeto route.

Hmmm... I'm just wondering if having a tiny fuge section is even worth it. I guess you could throw some chaeto in there and use it for pod breeding if nothing else.

The only other thing I can say is you might wanna consider plumbing both your overflows to your skimmer side and then teeing off the return pipe to feed your fuge, esp if you go the ball o' chaeto route. The idea here is that the water coming outta your tank is "dirty" and carrying a bunch o' junk that'll just settle out into your fuge section. By teeing off your return line, you can dial down your return to your display you give you more dwell through your sump and the water you are feeding the fuge is "clean." this is advice that was given me by my LFS owner and seemed sound to me when I set up my first tank.

Yeah it was gettin a little hairy trying to reply in traffic, not doin that again

I like the idea of the tee from the return vs the overflow. thanks for the advice

Be sure to use a gate valve if you need precise control over the flow. It is more difficult to find the skimmer "sweet spot" with a ball valve.

I have a gate valve on the skimmer

+1 and keep your reciepts. You may trade parts once or twice
