Need help. Several weeks ago I had an outbreak of red algae (hairy with bubbles). I have since added a new octopus skimmer, sump with cheato, I used Phosban, and reduced my feeding. I do weekly 10% changes. It went away and has come back again. Is use of phosban a constant need?

I have a 75 with a 20 gallon sump. I am out of town so i don't have photos and params. Let testing was in line.

Any basic advise?

The red stuff is not algae. Rather, it is a photosynthetic bacterium called cyanobacter.

It is impossible to answer your question without knowing your parameters.

Another consideration is the length of your photoperiod and type/age of your lamps.

Those along with parameters are part of the big picture. If we have all the info, we can identify problems/causes and help you find solutions.

I will update when I return. Curious about the qusetion regarding lighting. I have 4x65 watt that I run about 8 -9 hours. bulbs are about 4 months old.

Then it is probably not your lights.

Best to find out parameters, including alkalinity, nitrate, phosphate and magnesium.
