Red Net

I have been trying in vain to catch my skunk clown fish for the past month or so. Tried different ways. One thing I haven't tried is using a Red net. Foster and Smith claims that fishes cannot see red. Is that correct? Anyone had a better success rate with a red net in terms of catching a fish?

I have heard of using a red lense over a flashlight at night allows you to see the critters at night without scaring them. Didnt know it would work with fish too!

I've always waited til it was pitch black for a few hours in the tank then hit them with the lights on the tank and the fish will be stunned for a short while so slowly scoop them up

I'm interested in the red net theory as well.
There are a few brands of monofilament fishing lines that are red on the same theory.

I had a red net. Same reaction by fish, as to green net, blue net, black net, white net.

Even if they can't see the "net" they see the human gawking into the tank with glazed eyes and a mission...

Why use a net. I can just feed some Julian sprungs purple algae. Reach in with my hand and catch any fish I want in my tank. Nice and easy. Also stress free.

I have a red led on my headlamp that I use and it scares the fish at night. Not quite as bad as blue or white but they still react

I've been trying to relocate my pair of Tomato Clowns from the 210 for the past few months. I can literally get every other fish in the tank to go in to the fish trap when I try except for the clowns. I haven't tried the pitch black to sudden light with these guys yet but it worked well when I would catch my Bangai Cardinals when they were ready to release their babies. May have to give it a shot and see what happens. I agree with Jenn, any time I go near the tank they seem to know something is up ... and outsmart me. (which isn't too hard to do these days!)

That is the #1 Murphy's Law of Aquarium Keeping. I've experienced that myself - even held the door half-closed to "prevent" a yellow tang from going in, when I was after a Pygmy Angel. Every nassarius snail, crab, and fish went in - not the Pygmy. When I half-closed the trap, the yellow tang just turned sideways and swam in. :doh:

Never did catch the Pygmy...

They know. Just like your dog knows that today's "ride in the car" is to the vet, not someplace fun. They are all psychic.

even if they cant see red light they will still see the net. you have to think of it this way. when a color blind person sees a red net they dont see the color of the net but rather a shade of gray. same thing with the fish even if they cant see red they will see some other color reflecting off of it. the only way they wouldnt see the net is if the only light bouncing off of the net were red light. but since light is a combonation of all the different wavelengths something else will be visible.
