what causes this? I have some starting in my tank not all over the tank but where its at it has covered that rock or coral. what do I need to do to get rid of it?not that its ugly but i know it doesn't belong.

I have some chemi clean down here in Cochran. It doesnt take much but does require you to follow the direction to a T. As far as what causes it, Its a bacteria I believe. Even people with perfect params can get it. Is your tank fairly new. If so it comes on every time a couple of months or so after I've done a cycle.

tank is new but fish and live rock came from my 265 that crashed.it had some on it in the 265 but I washed it all off before trasfering it to the current 125 that it is in now.it stayed gone for about 2 weeks but is starting to show up again now in the 125.

Alot of people get it when setting up a new tank. Its just part of it. Get all your params in check. Do you run any gfo or anything for phosphates? After they are all in check get some chemi clean or you can use some of mine. Follow the directions like hitler wrote them and it will be gone. It may come back in the future but params are the best thing you can do for it.

params are good phosphates are 5ppm just did 25 gal water change tue.I'm building a new sump because the current sump will not house the reef octopus skimmer I have so i'm not running a skimmer right now.I just ordered 2 mp40"s that should be here today because I thought maybe I wasn't getting enough flow due to the amount of rock I have in there.about 200 pounds. also should I cu back on the lighting? I am running 3x 250 watt de mh along with 2 110 watt vho actinics. actinics come on at 10 am and the mh come on at noon and off at 10 pm actinics off at 11pm? too long?

The flow will help a good bit, get rid of the phosphates. Also you want an 8 hr light period. I've read that anything over 8 hrs does nothing for you corals, it only feeds algae after 8 hrs.

Get some chemi clean its a must in my book. Its cheap and it works.

chemiclean DOES work... but if its a new tank make sure its cyano and not just diatoms

for clearification when I say new tank thats not exactly true,I have a 265 gal reef tank and a 125 in-wall fish only tank that had mostly fake big pieces of decorative coral that i took out once a moth and cleaned.well I had a crash on my reef tank due to a skimmer mishap that I just couldn't over come no matter how many water changes I did.So I got frustrated broke down the 265 and moved what I had left in the 125 in-wall setup.because I had fish only that were large show fish I was sure the nitrates were off the chart so I removed all the sand, put it out to dry in the sun for two weeks to kill off anything rinsed it and started over with the fish and live rock from the 265.there. so the 265 is for sale along with about 200 pounds more of live rock that I couln't fit into the 125. the end.

I really wish I knew where my cyno comes from. On my 65 gallon, it hits my tank about every 3-4 months like clock work. I kill it with ChemiClean and my tank is good for a few months. But then it comes back. I have changed so many things over the years, I seriously have no idea what's causing it. Changed brands of food, rinse frozen food, changed brands of lights, even the fixture at one point (old one died), increase water changes, increase flow, add HOB fuge, add a reactor to house Phosguard.

So far nothing has prevented it from coming back.
