Ok if I cut about 4 inches off the top of red control tube would it cause any problems? My reason for wanting to do this is my limited height under the stand. Cutting 4 inches would make it so much easier to remove for cleaning etc....

Yes it is 
I want to cut the red tube about 4 inches shorter. I will also have to shorten the white tubing that is for the air intake

I'll look up the instructions and pics. But I'm a little confused. With the cup being up that high where to you gain space by shortening the tube?
The cup is removable and easily put back on once in the sump. that pipe is not as easy to remove and replace once in the sump. I appreciate any help
There's no reason why you can't shorten the the tube. As long as you can still turn it to adjust the height you're good to go.
