Reef under Siege - Waterbox AIO 50.3

Wow!!! You are definitely taking all the caution. That’s awesome. And learned something new :).

I’ve recently moved and my house seat at the top of the hill and have very low water pressures granted it is still above necessary limit.

So I was forced to buy small booster pump for the RODI. Recently, I started to save the water waterways coming out from the system and it’s about 20g (accepted)/30g (rejected). Which seems pretty good. I do end up with too much waste water (in 40gallon brute) so, I still have to waste the water unfortunately. Booster pump is really great way to save water and make your rod system run more efficiently for sure.

So, you all tell me: the Waldorf Astoria of all copepod hotels? Or a detritus trap that will be the origin of "worm sign the likes of which even God has never seen"?

Also, as I was draining the first batch of rock from its sodium percarbonate bath, this guy came crawling out of the rock?!?!

I've never seen, that I took note of, a brown wood louse / pill bug. At least not commonly, though were I out in the woods and prying open a dead log or something, I wouldn't have taken especial notice of it. Still, I always think of them as grey.

It had definitely been in the water for a while - I had not noticed it before, and I definitely watched it crawl out of a hole in the rock.

There's ... no way it could be a marine amphipod??? More likely it crawled in the rock while it was sitting in the garage of the person I got it from, or sitting in my garage, right? Like, the rock had been sitting just in tubs, as good as dry, for a couple of weeks or so? Or maybe it crawled in the bin sometime overnight and was swimming around, and I just didn't see it? This seems most likely, but, still, it was interesting to note.

Okay, so, here's all the rock I picked up and... thought I'd finished cleaning, anyway. However, none of it came as white and clean as I'd hoped, and I honestly think I might not have been using enough sodium percarbonate - the first round I honestly didn't clean well enough before putting it in, and especially when rinsing those, I sprayed off an enormous amount of detritus and old sand, along with what I'm pretty sure were the remains of untold bristleworms.

Also, I think using the 44-gallon barrel might have been less than optimal as only the rock on the very top saw sunlight, meaning I didn't get much of the UV+H2O2 bleaching action as I'd wanted. So, I've got more percarbonate on the way Tuesday, meanwhile, I'll let the rock continue in the sun for a while and bleach it one more time in the totes it came in, so hopefully it will be ready this weekend.

So, looking it over, for any of you experienced with building HNSA aquascapes, are there any rocks in particular you wouldn't use? Any that especially stand out as ideal for the task at hand? I have a really good idea of what shapes I want to create for the space I have, but as little to none of the rock is Marco-type, I'm not sure if there is any I should be avoiding or focusing on. Whatever I don't use here, I'll save for the 75-gallon I have.

There's one large piece of actual stone (the one that looks sort of like it has a saddle pommel on top, upper-left corner of picture 4, immediately above the ruler) that I have no intention of breaking apart, but it's also way too large to put in my 50g, so I'll save it for later.

I personally think one of most important part of long lasting run in reef tank has a lot to do with our aquascape and of course the type of the rocks you will be using. Honestly, I don’t like Marco/pucani type rocks with lots of craves and holes. The tank will take much longer timw to stabilize due to all the cracks and holes needing to be filled. Think of all the surface areas that are on your rocks and substrates like sands and bio medias. All those surfaces will compete with your corals to take a hold of your tank system.

I once heard you have football field amount of surfaces to deal with. Back in the days, more rocks are better, now days I don’t think so

So consider the best rocks to your liking. Keeping hands out of the tank is one of the best practice to make corals happy.

The USB 3.0 A-to-A cable came first, and it seems to have worked just fine! I had to reset it to factory, of course, and then it took me a minute to realize it was trying to talk to Neptune's servers and that I'd need to allow it through my firewall, but working like a champ! Temp sensor seemed to think it was sitting in 106ºF water for some reason, but seems to be fine after calibration.

I take that back. The temp sensor never did take calibration properly, I'm pretty sure it must be toast. The water it's sitting in is 66ºF. but it seems to think it's around 100ºF...

1739640750093.png

Okay despite nothing having changed and my house being the same temp as always, at around 10 am it shed 20º from the reading out of nowhere, but it's still off. Think I'm going to have to order a new one.

Just removed everything I don't NEED to start the tank from my shopping list(s).

Just $927.52 to go... sigh

Oh, plus whatever that new temp probe is going to cost me.

This hobby can get expensive... Even for me, i still feel like im about double cost to what i vision always... -.-; fyi, i have two temp probes and two pH probes in my main. You may get to the point of having doubles on somethings. This is specially important for parts we may need in a emergency like RETURN pumps, heater ect.

This is why I have a spare return pump (little less than half the GPH rating on my main, but it'll be an okay backup and fill in where needed like in a mixing tank), at least one spare heater (I'll use it for mixing and QT as needed), and in addition to the temp probe on my Apex, there's a temp probe attached to the controller for my lights, and I'll have an analog mercury-based thermometer as well.

Definitely a few spare items in my list. Not the bulk of the cost by any stretch, but definitely pushed it up some.

Man, I thought I was the only one that was willing to go through the pain.

I did the same and I feel your pain. The used rock I got for free has 3 inches of algae. My basement smelled for about a month? The wife was having a fit! 😂

Yeah... thing was, I thought my total shopping list was about $1k, and I said to myself, "Self, let's go pare that back to ONLY the things I NEED to get water in the tank. The Roller Mat fleece roller can wait. Protein Skimmer can wait. This, that, and the other thing can wait." I consulted my ongoing planning conversation I have with ChatGPT.

Surely, I thought, I can get this closer to $500. At one point I thought I had... then I added all the other little things like spare heaters and pumps, and I wound up with the below.

If anyone within an hour drive of me has several of these items for a decent enough price to make it worth the trip, please send a DM (note, the spare pump mentioned earlier is not on this list, nor is the refugium, combined cost ~$100. Also missing is a Nano-sized reef light for said 'fuge, ~$100 budget):

"Seachem Matrix, 2 L", $26.85. Good stuff
AQUANEAT Small Fountain Pump (2x), $19.98
AlgaeBarn 5280 Pods (Live Copepods), $44.99 (pretty dang expensive, others are out there). I used them before. Okay.

I didn’t know you can chat with ChatGPT and have it assist you. That’s really cool!!!

I want to give some run down to your list of items:

So:
Marineland Precision Heater, $15.59. There are better brands out there but yes, heater is needed.
This is meant to be used in my mixing bucket and QT tank, and function as an emergency spare as needed. I intend to control the two Fluval M150 heaters I already have for this tank with my Apex, primarily.

Salifert Phosphate Test Kit, $16.67 eventually need it
Salifert Nitrite Test Kit, $12.74 you really don’t need this but they do come in a package deal.
I figured I should be prepared to test all the things from the get-go, so I can do so as the whim strikes. I do try not to get too attached to parameters and test too often, but based on past and recent experience, I tend to test more often when a tank is new and stabilizing, while I'm figuring out how to tell what is going on with it via observation.

"Marineland Bio-Filter Balls, 90 Count", $8.49 Notnif you are using matrix. Which is better than this stuff
These are intended to occupy a small part of my return section and gather bacteria in preparation for transfer to a HOB filter used for QT so I have cycled media in it from the get go. Unlike matrix and ceramics, they can be properly cleaned and sterilized for re-use.
Geiserailie 15 Pieces Aquarium Filter Media Bags, $14.99. Get those carbon from redsea? That comes with media bags. Re-use em. You won’t use 15. I use 2 in 2 system. Gor activated carbons
Eh... I have 4 other fish tanks running at the moment, aside from this 50 I'm working on. I'm tired of washing, slicing up and emptying out old filter cartridges or using cut up pieces of pantyhose, etc. I may not need that many, could probably save a few bucks and get a few less, but this item actually is rather multi-purpose. I also preferred the size and shape of the SeaChem Matrix Carbon, and it's pretty well reviewed, especially for being low in leachates.

Seachem PhosNet Synthetic GFO - 50g, $11.64. Don’t need this unless you have phosphate issues and there are better way to go about it
I had phosphate pads in the cart, but swapped for this. Seems to be one of the better GFOs, and it was intended for emergency use, I hope to never need it.
ALEGI Aquarium Filter Media Foam Material, $15.9. Using as filter media for filter sock or filter rollers? Good stuff
Various uses throughout all my tanks, including as a pre-filter in front of my socks to reduce maintenance and fouling, as well as keep pesky inverts out of my overflows. Also going in my 'fuge to keep inverts (like lettuce sea slugs) out and in front of the fuge's pump in the return of my AIO.

"Alkaline Buffer, 300 g / 10.5 oz", $10.99 You should need this stuff
Should? Or shouldn't?

CURRENT USA eFlux Accessory Wave Flow Pump 1050 GPH, $79.99. There are better wave maker at cheaper price like hugger and he so
Yes, there are cheaper. However, I have a Current USA light fixture with integrated LOOP controller meant to run these pumps, and there are also FAR more expensive pumps, too. I've looked at the BRS review on it, I know it's a wide spread pattern, that in their tests seemed to fade halfway across their 6' test tank, but my tank is all of 35" across, and I think I'd prefer the cone to a "laser".

FritzZyme Turbo Start 900 Saltwater (4 oz), $25.49. This for cycling?
Yep. Live start: Water+Fritz on Day 01, three to four hardy starter corals on Day 02, one or two clowns and a neon goby on Day 03.

"Driveway Marker, Snow Stakes, 10 Pack", $9.99 idk what this is
These are for aquascaping, should I need them. Some pieces I may want to drill through and add a cut section of fiberglass stake and seal back over with mortar to ensure it's stable. I don't know that they'll be necessary, but I can probably find other uses around my property... I could probably move them to the "later" list, and grab a few from Home Despot should I decide I need them, but they're a pretty good deal here compared to store prices.

Python No Spill Clean and Fill Water Change System, $43.99. I guess you have sink near by
Yep, several. There's actually two bathrooms and the laundry room all easily within 25', especially since I cut a hole through the wall of my office into the laundry room on the other side, giving me direct access to the drain for the washing machine, as well as the sink in there that I can hook the python up to easily - my RO/DI unit is also in there so I can just open the access panel and pull the line through to fill my ATO or tank from.

Fritz Aquatics Maracyn Oxy True Fungal Infection Relief, $24.99 idk, no need to stock up on medication unless you really need em
API MELAFIX Freshwater Fish Bacterial Infection Remedy, $14.38. Same
Fritz Maracyn - Gram-Positive Relief, $34.99 same
API General Cure 10-Count Box, $16.37 not sure what this is

Those years in the Boy Scouts sometimes results in me over-doing it with the whole "Be prepared" thing.

Admittedly, I have no intention of doing anything but the most cursory QT on my first fish for the tank, probably observation only. After all, it'll be brand new and empty, so they're as good as in QT anyway, and, at least as far as this specific scenario goes, I trust my LFS enough to not be worried about it. All later adds WILL be QT'd though.

Speaking of which I need to add some coral dip to the cart...

Salifert Nitrate (No3) Test Kit, $17.37 will need this
Red Sea Marine Test Kit Magnesium, $30.0 probably use few times
Salifert Calcium (Ca) Test Kit, $15.99 probably use few times
Hanna HI772-26 REAGENTS (2 Pack), $34.99

All things that were recommended I have the ability to test, since you can't manage what you can't measure.

Red Sea Reef Energy Plus 250mL, $24.99 this amino stuff?
AB+ coral food. Yes, aminos, carbs, fats and vitamins.

Aquarium Choice Coral Feeder Long Syringe Tube, $18.99. Probably need ‘em
Yeah, and likely I'll find a lot more uses than just feeding corals, especially between all my other fish tanks (a 3.5g, a 10g, a 20g long, and a 29g bow).

AlgaeBarn 5280 Pods (Live Copepods), $44.99 (pretty dang expensive, others are out there). I used them before. Okay.
Yeah, definitely not the cheapest thing, but they seem to be the best reviewed/recommended for healthy, clean cultures. If GARF (R.I.P.) were still around I would just be ordering a bag of GARF Grunge and be done with it.

Carib Sea ACS00526 Mineral Mud Filter Media, $40.99. Probably good
Intended to go in the 14g remote "display refugium", under the sand.

GOYJOY Self Adhesive Aquarium Background, $12.98. Just paint it black or het one cheaper at Michael’s perhaps
It's to go on the custom-built drilled 14g fuge, which will be sitting right next to my tank. I wanted something that would come off pretty easy once I get the stand for it fully built out, but it could go to the "later" list and I could probably improvise something.

CaribSea Seaflor Special Grade Reef Sand (4x 15lb. bags), $119.96 (total)
I wanted to do black sand. I have some, even. But, I have numerous concerns. The stuff I have I fear is too coarse and sharp for things like a pink wrasse and fighting conch. The CaribSea stuff has too many reports of aluminum and silica contamination originating from it. So, much as I REALLY want black sand, unless/until someone can set my mind at ease, I think I'm going to have to wind up going with plain old white sand I'll need to buy.

Tropic Marin High Precision Hydrometer, $36.65 most people either pick hydrometer or refractometer.
I've heard arguments for and against both types. I figured maybe it wouldn't hurt to have both for a "second opinion", or if I don't want to deal with one or the other that day for some reason.

Sorry about unsolicited advises. Good luck with the build~~
No no, advice is appreciated! That's why I'm posting all this here! 😃

Oh, and ChatGPT is GREAT for this stuff, as long as you know how to manage it, and how to tell when it is hallucinating. You can't rely on it for anything critical, but as a sort of very well informed secretary who makes the occasional error, it's fantastic. I use it for everything from help coding for work, to keeping running tabs (and getting advice) for the D&D game I run for my kids, tracking my garden and flower planting and property maintenance, all kinds of stuff.

For e.g., I have one dedicated conversation for each of my fishtanks, another for "Saltwater General" and another for "Freshwater General", and yet another "Reef Livestock Master List", and all kinds of other things... especially for my resin 3d printer, which I knew next to nothing about when I got it.

For anyone interested, here are the two lists, live and up-to-date:
50g Waterbox Mixed Reef
14g "Display" refugium

Plus:
50g "Later" list

I'm down to $782.97 in the two carts, though that's missing a light for the 'fuge, nor does it include the 'fuge itself I have yet to actually purchase and acquire. Or the stand I'm going to have to build for it.

For pods, you might want to check out Bulldawg Reefing. They're a "local" business, and depending on where you are, you can go pick up in person and save yourself the hassle of shipping altogether.

The fact that they even label not just the item, but the bottle, "Apocalypse panamensis" is 🤦‍♂️ AlgaeBarn also lists the item on Amazon as "Apocalypse pods", iirc, to be fair.

Solid hour drive each way, but... it'll definitely be warm by the time I'm ready to order, might just be worth it to ensure they're alive and not wind up being required to pay for next day shipping or somesuch. Also, just to be sure I will be able to have them the day I'm ready for them, if I'm up to making the drive.

I didn’t know ChatGPT was this advanced!!!
Sometimes, I don’t know if I should take credit for what I did. My son is 16 and he uses AI for everything. I encourage him since that’s the future.

I say if you can grow your own Pod’s! Do this. It’s expensive treat for our tank and it’s easy enough for anyone to have separate systems running.

I forgot you have to setup QT tank. I personally never had bad issues with fishes other than when I overstock too fast and powder blue tang. I always buy from local lfs or from someone who is getting out. Their fishes are usually healthy.

Salifert Phosphate Test Kit, $16.67 eventually need it
Salifert Nitrite Test Kit, $12.74 you really don’t need this but they do come in a package deal.

Nitrite and Ammonia test kit are only used in the beginning, I skip these by just giving tank enough time to cycle

Bio medias takes time for its to mature and is effective in the system. I think having them seed and always ready is good. Specially for QT.

I had phosphate pads in the cart, but swapped for this. Seems to be one of the better GFOs, and it was intended for emergency use, I hope to never need it.
If you run into phosphate issue when system is running initially will likely need to be addressed right away instead of putting bandage over it.

ALEGI Aquarium Filter Media Foam Material, $15.9.
Using as filter media for filter sock or filter rollers? Good stuff

$25 to add enzyme to your tank seems very expensive. You can staple add raw fish meat.

Get medication as needed. I use LFS and they do keep them fish healthy.

I heard many good things about this product. I think I have some too.

Hydrometer is more accurate. Just make sure if you are going to get water from LfS’s. Test the water and make sure they are saltwater and not RODI. Also asked what brand and at what salinity they keep them and test them.
