Reefplumer13's Planet Aquariums Crystaline Reef

A small update, got the light holder painted and hung. The leds are getting a face lift and should be ready to mount in the next few days 20220925_191730.jpg

Good news and bad news
First the good! I got the lights done and installed yesterday when I got home. Put on the tank and left them off for the night while we went out..

Now for the bad the 3 frags I picked up yesterday from @The Reef Farm look like they aren't going to make it. No fault of the farm, looks like my heater stuck open and boiled the tank. Woke up this morning to the tank at 98..

So many ups and downs in this hobby. Sorry that happened to you. The lights look great on the plus side.

Sorry man, but consider it a blessing to happen now with minimal losses and not 6 months later with a lot more fish and coral. Good time to set up a temperature controller with the new heater.

You are 100% correct Steve. And I am doing so as soon as I get back home with the new heater

Well after a few set backs we are on the right path. Tank is now showing signs of life. Algae is starting to grow on the glass so After killing a few hundred dollars worth of coral. I'll be getting a few fish this weekend. I'll post a few pics this e evening

Nah, looks good, cycle of life and all, proof you tank can sustain some kind of algal life. This is nothing compared to what will happen later. Depending on how worried you are you can turn down the lights a bit if you don't have any coral you need to keep at certain light levels.

I have just never had green algae this soon.

I’m starting to buy into theory that coral competes with algae for same nutrients. So algae is winning here.

My limited experience say manually removing and getting some fast growth soft coral might help? Why wait?

Also - dang that is a really nice looking tank in white. Look forward to seeing it filled out next year ;)

What kind of rock did you start with? A Lot of the white dry rock out there is chock full of phosphates. If you mature it for a couple months in a tub you can get most of it out. Using it fresh and you will deal with gha for a while

I’m more than certain you’ve had experiences with new systems and the inevitability of ugly phases, but im bought on the theory that dry rock tends to make the presence of green hair algae a lot more apparent and just generally an eye sore for your display tank. There’s a Tidal Gardens video explaining that dry rock fuels green hair algae when it leaches phosphates in a new system

lookin forward to the day all the gha starts to wither and waste when all the nutrients inside the dry rock are dried up. In my experience, the faster it grows the faster it goes. Hopefully a clean up crew and some vertebrae-breaking manual removal oughta freshen things up a bit.

It was live rock that I cooked for a month to kill anything bad on the rock. Then seeded it with a rock from a friend's tank

This looks totally normal to me and part of the maturing process. I found the leaching of phosphates to be real even after leaving the lights off for 3 months. For GHA I had luck with Lawnmower blenny and the blue pin cushin urchin is great. I also thing pods are a good thing for eating various algal growths. If you have a lot of white spectrum in you lights turn that down a bit and be more blue tends to inhibit this as well. Stay the course and this will pass eventually.

Good luck
