I have an external pump pulling water from my sump feeding my tank. It seems when I open the valve just above a little bit it seems to not drain as fast is it is coming in. Is there any tricks I should be aware of or problems.

Hang on overflow box or internal drilled in overflows and what size if drilled?

How big is your return pump and how big is your drain? It is normal for the water level to fluctuate a little bit. For example, if you put a pump that puts 10gph in the display, the water will be just barely above the drain, but if you use something 1000gph, the water level will be significantly higher.

Sounds like your return pump is too big, or your drains are clogged with something...can you give us some more info on your setup. Drain size, return pump size, return pipe size?

I have a medium size pump I will have to get the size tom. The drain pipeis 1" all the way through, return size is 3/4" with a valve to control flow. I just cannot increase the flow hardly at all. I think the drain is clogged possibly. The chamber that the drain flow in is 4"x6" and 24" tall overflows onto a trickle screen. I dont know if the water in the chamber is slowing the drain down or not? I will try and come up with picks when I can find my camera. I will check to see if it is clogged in the morning. I have a large pump but it pumps back to the refugium and skimmer to cut down on how much goes into the tank. I think it should be draining faster.
