Has anyone setup their RKE(or RKL) to run off their wifi? Currently I have a long cord running across the office from the RKE NET Module to my computer, but my wife isn't loving that setup.

Also is anyone running their SIM Card for My Reef wirelessly?

Thanks

Wireless routers and gaming adapters have been known to work with the NET module but you have to really really really know what you are doing in the networking arena and need to buy the right router/access points/gaming adapters. And you would have to obviously mount it under your tank or wherever your NET module is....these types of electronics dont work well with water (dont know any that do really) so replacement would be neccesary over time i would imagine. I spent hundreds of dollars on gaming adapters, access points, and routers not to mention hours of internet research to try to get them to work.....nada

I figured it was worth it to install a dedicated ethernet cable outlet behind my tank. I found a guy on craigslist (there are a ton of them) that can install data cable outlets and for $100, he installed it and i didnt even have to move my tank. So now my Net module is hardwired and I dont have to worry about another power plug or unneccesary router replacement due to corrosion.

Not sure what you are talking about in terms of sim card and wireless myreef.....I only plug into myreef when making alot of programming changes. Otherwise the NET mods webpage handles all my needs just fine and I can access anywhere in the world to monitor and turn stuff off and on.

lynksys router is awesome, I had so many problems trying to get my ps3 to work properly untill I switched from atandT DSL over to Comsouth cable and got my lynksys router. AT and T are freakin idiots.

I tried 2 different models of Lynksys routers and access points to run my NET module, had to return them both - did not work with the NET module

I do use a lynksys for my home network and it rocks for regular networking stuff, tying into an RKE....not so much - for me anyway

hmmm I wonder if you have to manually assign it certain ports. Didnt barry ask about the ports in a recent thread. lemme find it maybe it will help this guy out

Edit: its for the Apex but maybe some of the info will help out.

There is a REALLY good section on setting up net/email/wireless in the "Unofficial Apex New User's Guide". It is stickied in the Neptune section of RC.

The specific menus are of course in "Apex speak", but the nuts and bolts of networking, port forwarding, etc are perfectly applicable to RK users as well. It's worth a look to anybody who is not a network or IT veteran.

If you go to the Digital Aquatics forum, you will find several threads on this topic. I highly recommend an Asus Portable Wireless Access Point (Model WL-330gE) to connect a NET module to a wireless network. It was very easy to setup. IMO, the only complication is setting up static port/IP address for your NET module. Typically, that is only needed for easy access to the NET module from outside your home network.

Again, that topic is thoroughly covered in the Digital Aquatics forums.

The IP issue can be dealt with easily by setting up a domain with dyndns.com (and, to make it easier, using a router that internally supports dynamic dns).

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions.

I read through the DA forum and posted there as well and got some feed back on what others were doing to run their systems through their wireless networks. Thanks for the suggestion on the Asus and I will check it out.
