I don't have the money to go by a rodi unit at this time. I did a little digging and my refrigerator actually uses a ro filter to dispense water. Would using my fridge to do water changes and to fill my ato be better than using regular tap? Its still an ro filter right?

Look for a handheld Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meter at your local LFS or borrow one from a fellow reefer.
Just make sure the tds reading from the fridge truly is better than your tap.

I bought the ro filter for the fridge. Not recently but that's what I changed it to. It didn't come with it of course. But the model I have came with the option and it was the same price so I just went with it. Its better for you than just sediment and carbon filtration.

Ya check the tds and have fun rigging up a system that doesn't take you 6 hours to fill a bucket.

You can buy a 15 dollar tds meter off ebarf all day long...test the water quality and try rigging a y compression fitting or similar to the out side of the filter w a ball valve. Parts would be cheap and you would be set up to fill a bucket or just a cup if needed. :D

i wouldnt use my refrigerator not that ive even heard of RO even being an option in even the most expensive ones. you are just going to use that filter up fast and cost more money. you should just buy your own rodi setup. patience in this hobby goes a long way. some things you cant skimp on..rodi unit being one of them.

That was certainly the point. I can't afford the unit at this time. So I was trying to find an alternative to regular tap water u til I can get one. Patience being the key there. But I can't just not do water changes. So....

Just buy the water at ur LFS. It cost very little and will work for now till you can get a unit. That's what I did for the first six weeks of having a tank. Keep ur eyes peeled for a used one maybe.

You can get them off ebay as well. Probably one of the single most important investment in reefing or aquariums in general. Always check Craigslist as well.
