rookie mistake :(

I cleaned off the whole tank, sprayed down the rocks, sucked up any algae, and had the tank looking really nice.

I turned everything off, and took out 5 gallons of water. Picked up my bucket of water and poured it in. I was very happy with how smooth everything went.

Then..... dundundun

About 10 minutes later I looked down and realized that my bucket labled RO had no water in it.... and my bucket labeled salt was full. UGH.

In a panic, I measured the salinity and it went down to 1.21- I quickly did another water change with the salt, and it is back up to 1.23. There is nothing more I can do then let everything settle and I filled my ATO with salt water to try and get it back up to 1.25.

I felt like such an idiot and I am really mad at myself. So far, everything looks good.... I can only hope it stays that way.

Let this be a lesson.... ALWAYS check to see which water you are topping off with. Some of the most trivial tasks can kill a lot of awesome things.

Thats ok, we all do it sometimes and I am not sure if thats a rookie mistake. I, myself always finding out why my newly mixed salt water never fill up the tank after a water change. Only then I would find out that I had left my drain valve open (I have an automatic waste drainage connected to my system). So all that freshly expensive mixed salt water came into the sump and out into the drain..%$%&#$.

FYI for future reference, the damage was already done. Livestock have a heck of a lot easier time adjusting down then they do up. Immediately fixing instead of slowly adjusting could have caused bigger issues than the mistake that got you there in the first place.

FWIW I think we have ALL been there buddy!

Oof. I can't imagine you making any mistakes like that in your beautiful fish room :)

Unfortunately I read that AFTER I rushed trying to fix it. So far... everything looks normal which is good. For about 20 minutes my clam was closed up, but now he is bigger than I have ever seen him.

I think if everything looks good the next 24 hours, I should be okay!

But I do appreciate the advice Jessie- next time I will add it slowly! I want to see your new set up.

Your welcome over anytime bud.

Just curious...why did you have a 5gal bucket of RO water near the tank anyway? Pouring in water...that is what pumps are for!:shades: I pump the water out of my sump into one colored trash can. Another Pump in the Mixed trash can pumps the water back in. All mixing is done in the Laundry room where the RODI unit is.

haha well.. my kitchen is currently being remodeled and I live in an 1100 sq ft. condo. So I have been purchasing my water the past few weeks (since I can't get to my RODI), otherwise I would be pumping everything in and have 2 completely different buckets!

Figured it might have been something like that. ;) That was the only type of reason I could think of...apt or townhouse type getup. When you get done with your kitchen...head on over to my place. :lol2:
