Rule of thumb for sizing a RDSB?

I've seen a few people consider this, to be told that "that isn't big enough to make a difference".

Sandie's tank (30g) has a 2.5g "fuge" with a SSB and chaeto in it, and I've been considering filling it deeper (within about 1.5" of the water level) with sand and making a DSB out of it, with the chaeto on top like a mat... similar to what Rob did with a 17g on his 55 for those of you that are familiar with it.
That is the largest tank that there is room in the stand for (there is another 2.5g ATO reservior underneath it).

Worth it or not?

Let us know the dims of the tank...
(no clue what a 2.5gal is like, LOL)

In the kitchen? She'd be madder than she was due to the MR4R sitting there for a couple months...

The tank size means the sandbed would be 12x6x6.

That would mean about 12x4 RDSB...
I say: COOL
The bucket however would be totally close and just two hoses going there...

No, the DSB would be 12x6 and six inches deep. The tank is 12x6x8.

I'll give it a shot. I guess the best tactic is just new/clean/dead sand on top of the ~1.5 or so that is already in there. I think I have some new stuff sealed in a bucket, even though I hate to waste black sand on that.
