I am switching up my filtration and with that comes a skimmer change. I know people run tanks with no skimmer all the time. I wanted to know the short term ill effects (if any) of taking a skimmer off of an established tank for a week or two. I am most worried about O2 echange vs any increases in nasties, I can always change the water for that.

when I did the chem clean and skimmer went crazy I left it off for 2 weeks doing a 20% WC every 48 hrs and then I took down the 75 and moved everything to a stock tank for 3 weeks with no skimmer.

Gary you could always put a couple of maxi-jets in your display and aim them at the surface to increase O2 exchange. You could also put an airstone in temporarily too. Honestly, you would probably be ok doing nothing.

Much smaller tank and it was new with not a ton of bio-load but........my tank ran for months with no skimmer. I just made sure to do weekly water changes and had no problem. I also angled my power heads toward the surface to get a little ripple action going. I think you would be fine.

Gary I have two tanks that I have run 2+ years without a skimmer. One is a 29g with 20g attached and one is a 20L(HOB filter on this one for carbon and 1 powerhead). Just SCWD and 2 power heads on the 29g with weekly water changes on all tanks.:D

Just run carbon if not running a skimmer and increase your wc by 50% to keep export of nutrients at a good level skimmers are not realy needed just help us be lazy

Gary,

Don't you travel a lot for work? Without a skimmer, you'll really need to stay up on waterchanges. A skimmerless system will mean more maintenance.

Just sayin'

He stated it was for a week or two is all.

Edit: Air stone will help. I have a pump you can borrow if you like.

Edit: I don't think you need it.

My tank hasnt had a skimmer in over a year. Water changes non existent 0 nitrate 0 ammonia 0 nitrite quite a few members will tell you its the happiest healthiest tank they have ever seen.
This said 2 of my other tanks are treated differently with varying results.
