I was moving my lights around last night and dropped a metal "s" hook into the tank. The hook is about 1.5" long. After a lot of looking last night with no luck we have concluded that it has dropped behind the rock work :mad2:.

Will I have to break down the tank and find this?

My tank is a 60 cube with 20 gallon sump.

All opinions are welcome. Especially the ones that say "nah its cool nothing is going to happen".

Thanks and happy reefing.

nah its cool nothing is going to happen................for a while. I am pretty new to this so don't rely just on my say so but, no matter what material it is made of (most likely steel with cadmium plating) it will start to rust over time. Salt water is very corrosive. How much that corroding metal will affect the tank, I can't say.

Get it out as fast as possible. If it has any copper in it whatsoever it could be harmful to your inverts.

It is most likely a steel hook and I wouldn't worry about it. I can't think of any use of copper in normal hooks. If it is a brass hook then go diving. If you want the (steel) hook back you could get a magnet on a rope and go fishing.

rather than tear the tank down, try running your mag float across the lower rear of the tank to 'draw' it to the magnet.. you may get lucky.
of course a kitchen magnet tied to a line may do as well.

Thanks for the fast responses guys. Arc rocks.

The hook is just a common one from Lowes so no brass. I was planning on doing a water change today so perhaps I will get lucky and find it.
