Aluminum foil around the ledge of the stand will also deter them

As mentioned above, i have had decent luck with my little tabby f'er using aluminum foil

I ordered the spikes as suggested and so far so good... It's not the most attractive look but if it works I figure I can remove them in a few weeks. The kitty doesn't try it every night, maybe once a week. Hopefully it continues to be a solution long-term.
