for our applications (relatively low pressure, non mechanical seals) it's alright to use silicone grease even on silicone o rings.. I havent seen any silicone o rings used readily on anything that I've taken apart/repaired except for calipers on the front of my truck.. which, by the way, come with silicone grease as a lubricant..
 
I actually use KY.. if it's safe enough to eat, chances are its ok for tanks.
In a pinch I've used some of the wife's chapstick.. don't tell mkay? :)
 
I did not know mineral oil was petroleum based.
