OK...I started up my tank on Instant Ocean Salt mix. Now that my container is about empty I'm wanting to upgrade to a more reef compatible salt mix. So I'm trying to get a feel for what brand the majority of my fellow reefers are using.

Thanks.

Seachem Aquavitro salinity, I've tried pertty much every salt out there even ReefersBest and find my SPS to have best color when using Salinity

you sir, are "over the line!" and reported! ............lol

If there was a definitive better salt it would have been determined by this point. Different tanks require different specifics and respond better to different salts.

There are amazing tanks using every salt on the market.

+1 well put, but IMO a salt such as Coral Pro is to high in alk. and cal.to maintain good colors in SPS corals on the other hand if you looking for fast growth and don't mind brown corals it's fine

Although I don't use that salt, brown corals are not caused by salt...and actually, ANY salt will work in ANY tank....you just might need to add a liitle mag here or calcium there...

Brown SPS corals are usually caused by enough light, and/or high nutrient levels.

phates over 0.03
trates over .5

I agree with high nutrients and bad lighting but disagree with any salt mix will do unless your growing softies on my LPS system I like higher ALK. and Cal. but not on my SPS system, Alk over 8.dk is going to cause problems IMO such as burning tips and so on. I ran ZeoVit for years but have gone a diffent route now

yes, on a ulns you want lower ALK as do I.....but that still generally only effects the growth tips when Alk is above 9....

This thread was geared as general; not ULNS, like ZeoVit and the like

Your right, I find myself adding to much to the topic at hand

tried salinity for several 200 gallon buckets had some good growth and colors were pretty good but had so many other issues with it I went back to reef crystals. I decided to give red sea reef pro a shot and after 2 buckets I have been fighting cyano. I couldn't figure out what the problem was since I was testing water and finding everything seemed OK even though mag was a little lower than I care for. Purchased a new mag testing kit and found mag was actually between 950 and 1050 and I am running my spg at 1.025. Decided to pickup another calcium test kit and found calcium levels at 350 and alkalinity is lower than I care for it to be for a mixed reef of sps,lps and zoa's.
I have one more 200 gallon bag and will be monitoring it closely, if I have to continue with the continued high dosing I will be considering going back to reef crystals (its deffinetly cheaper) or reconsidering giving the salt I love to bad mouth a second chance.
I will say I used reef crystals and seachem reef salt for years without any problems and consider them both very good salt which if truth be known probably come from the same source just a short break in the filling line while they change out buckets

salinity, but i may go RC next batch. I have issues with salinity not mixing well in my mixing bucket, may be an issue on my end, but I wont know unless I try something else. :)

From my experience, this is somewhat of a contridiction. You say you don't like RSCP because you want you Alk a bit lower. Since I started using it, my Mag and Cal are always dead on without dosing. The only thing I have to dose is Alk. So, seems to me the RSCP would be exactly what you are looking for. But I could be wrong. :shades:
