I see everyone with the big blue barrels for water mixing. Im assuming these have to be for potable drinking water, as im giving my fish water that better thn what i drink ;)

Couple questions-

Is there a local supplier for these?

and 2)

Is food grade the same as for potable use?

Thanks,

Skybird

There are local places you can get them at. I'm not sure where but I do know some here on arc that does. Second, if it's food grade then it's safe for holding mixing water. Good luck.

Have a look on craigslist under rain barrels. I think the white ones they have are probably from Coca Cola, used for transporting syrup.

im not sure i want to introduce a used barrell for this, espcially if im not 100% sure what was in it before.... Id rather buy new for piece of mind, if i buy online they are like $70 mid range, shipped to my door... I just dont want to wait that long! ;)

I've been told that you can get them from the tractor supply store (?). Never been, so I can't say for sure, but it sounds legitimate.

There are lots of local sources. Used should not be a problem if they are food grade. Many corporations won't let them be used more than once because they are afraid that it could get contaminated and then they will lawsuits. Ones that held pickles would be the absolute best since pickle juice is vinegar and we use vinegar to clean everything anyway. :-) If no one pops up on this thread with a place to get them, post a new thread in the Wanted to Buy section with a title of "WTB Mixing Barrels" and I bet you get several replies in short order.

I've seen them on there for as low as $10 a piece. And probably not too far from you. I got the idea from Reef Central, so I'm sure other people have gone this route. But, as you've said, there is that unknown factor to consider.

Edit: Listing on craigslist for food grade barrels.

great price, your right, the SC part sucks... since it will cost me roughly the same amount to drive there and back as getting one shipped to me ;)

EDIT: The majority of the barrels appear to be in ag areas, which is to be ex[ected, unfortunately, they are right around my GF's bio-dad, which im not properly equipped to handle such an event!!!!

Got mine on Craigslist from a guy in Stockbridge or something.
He had LOTS of them!

There is a place on Hwy 369 (Browns Bridge) a few miles west of 400 that has them for sale. Not sure what was in them but the are the plastic blue drums. To be safe, you could fill them with a mixture of water and white vinegar for a while then rinse them well.

Hodges Army Navy might have them

Advance Drum in Mableton has used one that would be food grade (100.00 min order I think)

We sell them NEW at about 55/each with a $250.00 minimum order (Group Buy? Hehe)

Yellow White and Blue are certified Food Grade, the black ones and red ones can be certified food grade, but aren't

Hope this helps

Dakota, is it safe to assume by the color that they are food grade? Is that a national standard? If so, I may just have to stop off at the place on 369. I go by it all the time.

There's two major North American manufacturers of Drums (Barrels are wooden, usually with metal re-enforcements, so ask for drums :) ) These are Mauser and Greif

Greif Drums are all certified food grade except for the black ones. Even the black ones can be certified as such, they just aren't.

I believe, not 100% certain, that all of Mauser's Drums are certified food grade except the black and red, but most likely, like Greif, these could attain certification if tested.

These are the 100% HDPE drums that I am referring to, of course.

I got mine from the guy on 369 and have had no problem.

Oh, and just a bit of a disclaimer, even a Food Grade Drum isn't food grade if certain non-food Items were stored in it previously....

I mention this as recently I sold 12 drums to a Meth-Lab Cleaning Up company after a big local bust....... Twelve 55 gallon drums!

that's a lot of Meth!
