Ok guys I did a water change yesterday and I switch to a red sea coral pro salt and I noticed the I have a lot of brown algae on my sand any reason why this is happening is it because the salt.
also I get my water from publix.

Where do you guys get your water from I know al lot of you have rodi sistems

Either use your own sytem or the one at the lfs. Is it a new tank? Sounds like diatoms

Actually...I don't agree. I tried this very same salt and got the same results (among other issues with the salt) with my RO/DI unit that displaces 0 TDS. When I switched back to I/O, and now Kent, the issue went away.

Publix is probably ok, it's actually from what you are not doing to remove the nutrients that you are putting into the tank. Nutrient reduction is your friend. There are so many ways to get there, but first, what is your nutrient systems comprised up first? % of water changes? Weekly? Nitrates? Phosphates?

Diatoms can also be caused by a variety of issues including silicate....but remove nutrients that you are putting into tank, and you are generally fine....

There are many systems to take care of most any tank, we just need more info.

For what it is worth, the same thing - Use publix water and switched to red pro - Same thing happened to me. Went back to IO reef crystals, still used publix water and am good now.

That is just my experience

My tank is a year and a half old and this happend from yesterday to today

Stranger things can happen. Nobody is immune to a bad batch of salt every once in a while.

albeit anecdotally, it is possible, however unlikely....I have never use said salt however, as I use Salinity. Love this.

I purchase the salt at the fish store (warehouse aquarium)whit Kevin I'm not saing is a bad store but should I call hem tomorrow what do you guys think.

Edit: I guess the question is how do I get rid off this ugly algae?

realistically, the salesmen or woman of said salt is not going to tell you and confirm that the salt is the issue....(and, most likely, that said person is 99% correct! and not because it IS that person, but because SALT is not USUALLY the problem, however, it can be......)

I would doubt it is the salt. From what I have read, any major change in chemistry can trigger diatoms for a short period of time. In new tanks, the silicates feed it until depleted but as Ralph has said, there are other causes.

If I were in your shoes, I would just vacuum the sand a bit to get rid of it. My guess is that after a water change or two using the RSCP you will have no issues.

Also a victim. Still using it with more water changes and vacuuming because the growth is great. But I used my last bit today and am going back to RC.

Alright well I wont throw out that it "could" be rscp but I wouldn't trust publix for my water; especially if you aren't TDS testing it yourself prior to mixing. I want to say rscp doesn't have the magnesium that it advertises, but w/e. I have been considering going with something else after this batch, any suggestions?

Salinity come with screw tops? IO is blue with white pop-on/sealed top correct?

nm blue with white top is oceanic.

Been using rscp for 6 months with no issues. I tend to agree that it is a tempory thing caused by the chemistry change and should go away within a few water changes.

I switched from RC to RSCP about a month ago, had no such bloom. Also my magnesium is higher than stated on the box at the appropriate mixing. Heck, even what's on the box is higher than the RC magnesium levels.
Only problem I have is that it's so amped up compared to my tank water that the alkalinity difference causes the corals to get irritated. I now change 4g every few days and no problems instead of 15g ever week or so.
