Sand stuck in drain!

I have a vacuum line connection under my tank which tubing which is connected directly to my drain under my sink. The drain has a trap, but this weekend the drain got backed up and began to back up and caused some wet carpet, etc. This is a 9 story office building and so maintenance wasn't too pleased! They thought that it was an accumulation of sand as opposed to a one time occurrence.

I was thinking I would rig a 5 gallon bucket with an outlet at the top where I could vacuum the sandbed into the bucket, allowing the water to rise and come out near the top and connect back into the drain, keeping the sand and any heavy detritus in the bottom of the bucket.

Will this work? Is there a product already out there that does something like this?

Thanks,

Wade

Haven't seen any product out that does this but it should work. I know when I vaccum my sand all of it goes to the bottom of my bucket. Fairly quickly as well.
