I am going to be starting my 180 gal tank this week, I need lots of sand. Some-one told me that sand from a brick yard is fine as long as it goes through the cycle. Is this true?

you would just be better off buying sand specificly for salt water.when it comes to things like that you dont want to take short cuts it will just cost you more in the long run.

sometimes sand not designed for SW tanks contain silicates...not good for tanks.

find a sand you want/like and put a thread together in the wanted section and you should find what you need quickly - I posted and less than 30 min later my sand was ordered and on the way to a sponsor store - dont forget to rinse, rinse, rinse, and then rinse again

Reef sand is cheap. Buy the dry stuff and it's under a buck a pound (which, sure, for 200# gets up there). Just keep things in perspective. Would you rather spend an extra $50-$200 now and never worry about it, or get a deal for free and have it wiping out a thousand dollars worth of rock/corals/livestock later?

Do it right the first time...

If you're patient and can wait til the 10th, I'm picking up a 120 that has live sand already. Since I won't be setting up the 120 right away, I can let the sand go cheap, <$1 a pound.
