Does anyone know if there are any ill side effects from putting some sort of sand sifting goby in a tank with black sand? Do they get the same amount of nutrition from sifting the black sand? What about jawfish for that matter? Do they do ok with it?

They get the nutrition from the life in the sand, not from the sand itself. So, as long as there is plenty to eat, the goby should be fine.

I think a goby is essential with black sand since crap can easily show on black sand.

This was my concern. I know things settle on the sand and looks awful. I was wondering if the black sand would grow the same amount of microfauna(sp?) as the aragonite.

yep, the pods will live in there and do just fine. :)
