they are great for small tanks, my nano used one, on a mj1200, on a little 5 gallon tank there's not much for options, I plumbed it into a closed loop and it worked great, the maxijets work fine external, but I did put it inside a little tupperware container in case it ever leaked
it would stop working every once and a while, sometimes a tap was all it took to fix it, or I would put it in a pail of muratic acid to clean up any deposits
I too wish they made one that was servicable, but it would complicate a very simple device quite a bit, and a potential to leak
