sea cucumbers and NO3 PO4

Tiger tail cucumbers absolutely pose a risk of the dreaded "cuke nuke". Like many of thier colorful filter feeding cousins they come equipped with cuvierian tubules, which is the last line of defence for the creature. Depending on the size of the cucumber vs the size of your tank it could very well wipe out entirely.

It is important to note that all cucumbers have multiple lines of defence. The release of the cuvierian tubules is understood to happen only in the most severe of situations I.e. animal eaten or sucked into an mp60 or such. However remote it may be it CAN happen and you should take precautions when adding this to your tank.

Do you have a link to this info? I would like to learn more.

Thanks JB

This should suffice

I am personally an advocate for Holothurians. I love them. Check out the section near the bottom titled "Dreaded Cuke Nuke"..... THEN go get some cucumbers if your tank is large enough. :)

Edit: Dang it Jesse you beat me to it!

Read that before. So I guess if I put one in a blender and then pour it in my tank it would "nuke" it. I have 3 any one want to offer their tank as a test, I supply the cuc.

Could we get back to the original question please.

Not sure what your saying or implying here, seems very contradictive?

Your signature also must be for show huh... Oh well, back to the regular scheduled program.

Actually, I was thinking of you when I typed in that signature.

We can discuss cucumber toxin in another thread.

I do not think cucumbers would alter the sandbed NO3 and PO4 in any appreciable amount. It is true that they would remove some from the substrate as they ingest it. However, they would soon release it again when they eliminate.

For control of these polyatomic ions I would use macroalgae. They absorb and actually use them.
