I tried running my softie aquarium without a sump/skimmer but I'm struggling with nitrates so I'm thinking of adding one. I already have the sump/skimmer since it came with the setup when I bought it. I currently don't have a top and I know from past experience that salt will wind up on everything nearby if I run it the way it is. Since it's near my computer and TV, I don't want to risk that.

Here are two ideas that I have and potential problems I see. Please comment on this or I'm open to other suggestions.

Buy a glass lid. This won\'t cover the worst part though, the overflow. The pipes are sticking above the water line. Also, this could cause more heat but I\'m not having any troubles there so I\'m not too concerned.

Build a canopy that is tight-fitting. Then I could paint the inside with the epoxy paint that\'s made for underwater use. I\'d need to replace my light though because it would be too wide to fit under a canopy.
