I ordered a Lab Grade PH Probe from a sponsor along with some other items. After some of my order finally arrived (wont go into detail, giving them a chance to make good). I just unpacked it and this is what it looked like.

The white stuff you see looks like salt creep to me, it is all crusty and the probe is completely dry. I am not even attempting to use it at this point.

That looks like the pin point pH probe. I have seen a few of these brand new and they have all had fluid in the cap and have not had any white build up. Was it in bubble wrap?

The PH probes I've seen usually have some leakage from the cap. Is the inside of the cap totally dry?

That is dried storage fluid, I have seen many probes like that and all worked flawlessly...

Seems like I recall the company stating in the directions that the tip of the probe isn't supposed to dry out. I don't have a set right in front of me, but I'll check tomorrow and you know.

but shouldnt it still be wet in the cap? It came with absolutely no documentation.

Somewhat common. Calibrate it and you'll see it's okay.

Ill try it - Im more concerned about a diminished life expectancy vs it not workign right out of the box.

What is the difference in a lab grade PH probe and a regular PH Probe? Anyone know?

Many of my probes have come with the crusty stuff but there has always been fluid in the cap. If inside the cap is damp, you are probably OK. If it is totally dry, I would send it back.

it was damp so i feel a little better...gonna try to calibrate it shortly..

As long as the tip is wet you should not have any issues r/t funtion or life expectancy of the probe.
