Skimmer Choice for a New Setup

Even though others will probably disagree I use and have had great success with a Marineland 100 Skimmer on my 72 bow. I use a 20g long (fits under the stand) for my sump/refuge. Baffles are glass pieces (not tempered just window glass) cut to size by Lowes. Then used silicone (the good GE stuff) to secure). Took one afternoon to do, 7 months ago. The tank was bought used (about $15) glass about $5 each (3pcs) silicone I think $5. The skimmer was purchase on Ebay for $149 w/ no shipping. Empty colection cup every other day. Small footprint w/ needle wheel pump all-in-one. Had to take apart pump twice, once to clean stuck piece of something and once to clean up calcium build up. The only thing hat I do not like is that the collection cup lid is a ***** to remove but am going to add tabs to assist. I leave the skimmer running and remove the collection cup, clean it out and put it back on. Check in an hour or two o make sure it's skimming ok then leave it alone for 1 to 3 days usually 2.

Hope this helps. I do use a Red Sea Priszm HOB skimmer on the 20g sump for my 55g (FOWLR) I'm relatively happy with it but am getting another Marineland skimmer for it soon.

the WTF was ment about the echo...I posted that before my other post and it never showed till then...Idk what happend...thats why i said that

Hmm...still reading and not quite sure on what to purchase? Personally, i just need some basic set up advice, not so far in depth since i havent ever had to be concerned with equipment of this nature coming from a nano cube.

I guess ill check the widths and either go with 110 Recirculating Octopus 2008/9 model or look into the marineland ones or the mini as noted, someone mentioned. Thanks for all the input though, i greatly appreciate it....

Where does the recirc go if not in the sump?

Depending on the pumps with it and with room , it can be mounted outside the sump

this is an example of that installation

How much room do you have in the sump. I have a euro reef for sale that would be more than enough for your tank.

I just set up a 24" cube, and I am running an Octo Extreme 160. Pretty small footprint, as the skimmer sits on top of the pump. I added the ATB purple pinwheel mod for a bit more air. These skimmers run about $270 and the pinwheel mod is about $30. Reef Octopus gives you a standard needle wheel and the mesh mod materials with the skimmer, which is pretty nice.
