Skimmer question

My skimmer when it's on gets the tank up to 80-84 degrees. I turned it off and the temp after 1 night dropped to 76. Turned it back on and it rose to 80.7. Should I leave skimmer always on or maybe just run it during the night?

If you are concerned about the high temperature and don't have a chiller. Have you tried reverse lighting?

I have tried turning light of during day and it was a min. Drop

You can always turn the skimmer off during the day to see. If you noticed increased in algae and cyanobacteria. Then you will know the answer to that. However from my experiences, I have yet to see anyone overskimmed a tank even with it being on 24hrs.

and I halfway desecnt pump dunno much bout it.

Power compact lights above tank and glass cover for eel which I leave open when I'm home so the heat can escape.. Room temp stays at 71-73 degrees

The pump is the issue I would guess. Is it a pump that comes with the skimmer or separate?
Unless you are running a massive pump or something is wrong with the one you have it would be very unusual for to increase temp by 8 degrees not to mention 13 degrees over your homes regular temp.

Edit: FWIW I'm no expert, just seems odd to me. I'm sure someone with more expirence will speak up soon.

skimmer has pump. I have return pump as well

Edit: whats temp for feaking out... 84,86 etc

It isn't only the max temp, but large swings can be an issue too (at least with corals).

I think you have a problem with the skimmer pump... even Mag pumps (some of the most notorious heat generators) won't heat up the water anywhere near that bad.

I picked both pumps up and neither felt hot... Could it be the skimmer it self? Hard to mess with it

maybe you should get one that doesn't raise your tank temp..

what kind of skimmer is it? (is it run by a MAG pump by any chance? (if so, replacing the pump could fix the problem) - B, beat me to it..


on a side note, my mag pumps have been so hot before that they were hard to hold in my hand..

Those are AKA Mag Drives. They do produce a bit of heat, but not enough to do what you are experiencing IMO. I have run a 9 on a skimmer and a 7 on the return for a long time, and no heat issues.
