Well my dad got me a reef octopus 110 skimmer for christmas which is rated up to 125 gallons..... this will obviously be way too much for my 30 gallon right?

Its overkill but it will work. Nothing wrong with running a huge skimmer on a small tank, just means your evaporation will likely go up slightly and you may need to watch your water levels a little more.

Edit: Is this tank sump'd? If it is I would go ahead and give it a try; cant hurt. If anything it will just turn your tank into a low nutrient system, but those minerals ect are replaced on water changes.

Yes i am in the process of building a 15 gallon sump. Is there any way to tone the skimmer down? If not I can just return it.

No way to tone it down and have it still skim properly, if you have plans to do that 15 gallon sump I would keep it. Also if you plan to have a larger tank in the future or near future I would also keep it; they are fantastic skimmers.

My advice with skimmers is to cut the rating in half. Since your going to add the sump it's really not that far off. I run a skimmer rated up to 300 gallons on my 150 and it works great!

You'll be fine in my opinion.. Sounds like a good reason to move to a 90g tank :)

I run the Octopus 110 on my 34 gal cube with a 12 gallon sump and it works great.
I took it off of a 65 gallon with a 20 gal sump which it also worked well on.
