I have got everything on my new tank set up but i actually had to redo somethings and havent started cycling the tank. My question is besides reading the instructions, does anyone else have any suggestion as far as setting up the skimmer? The skimmer is a 110 octopus recirc. I used the all the provided o rings and plumped it correctly but didnt use pvc glue. I guess i will just turn it on and control the bubbles with the venturi valve and the water input and thats it, correct?

Thanks for the input and excuse my typing, i meant plumbed it correctly as im at work and cant spend a large amount typing on the forums....

Wrap the PVC end (tightly) with a couple rounds teflon tape prior to insertion to cut down the salt creep and prevent drips. A gate valve on the input will give you precise control. Ball valves work ok but are not as fine tunable. Gating the output will work but I do not like restricting drains of any sort.

Let it run at a lower setting (water level slightly higher than bottom of neck) for about a week to break it in. It will magically start frothing after 4 or so days.

I am actually gonna take a different approach after alot of consideration and try it first without a gate valve and the standard tubing, so hopefully the pump that came with, will pull the appropriate amount...if not ill need to make a change then

Wrong choice of words. I should have said reliably pushing upwards into the cup. All the skimmers I have experienced were temperamental during the first few days until the body and neck get good and slimed up.

well its an internal/external skimmer, so essentially couldnt you just place the feed line into the water and it will pull it in? i assume yes is the answer to the question

There is some sort of reaction that the acrylic has with the water initially. Wiping it down good doesn't usually cause one to require another break in period. A vinegar bath probably would. Anyone else know what occurs during skimmer break in?

Is this it?

Am I missing something? I bought my skimmer used (MSX-150, no instructions). I have it setting in the sump... no plumbing in and no plumbing out. I have it adjusted for a dry skim. I think it's working great. Should I be doing something differently?

No, i def didnt and i posted up my set up and everyone said it would work but after multiple test last night, im gonna have to tie into my return pump or delegate a seperate pump to feed the water to the skimmer....awesome, time to replumb

JC, but why would the feed line not pull in water if the skimmer could be placed in sump??

man thats frustrating as all, i noted all this in another thread when i was deciding what plumbing route towould take and everyone noted both suggestions would work, now ill have to take down what is already done and redo lines...:bash2: dang it, oh well........thanks for the input

it is currently set up like picture #1 in this thread...

i opted for the first because i didnt see much point going the second way besides the gate valve and i figured with a nipple inlet that it would essentially control itself but apparently im wrong..

it is currently out of sump and no nothing is pumping water into the skimmer...
everbodys input plus the directions and etc, is making this more confusing than it prob needs to be..

This skimmer is noted as it can be ran in sump or out of the sump, if it is in sump then my assumption would be you wouldnt need a pump to pump the water into the skimmer. With that said, why would you need a pump to pump the water into the skimmer if it is ran externally in the same sense, couldnt you just extend the feed line ....i am assuming no by your reactions and everyone else, which i thought you could from the prior thread i am wrong

Thanks, ill consider that and might just re plumb it to be able to control the input.

Side note: Its in a room with all hardwoods and its noise level i would say is fair, ive never owned another skimmer obviously so i wouldnt have anything to compare it to but its def not that quiet.

Thanks Dawg, i greatly appreciate all the help and how about ill post some pics later tonight so you can confirm what i have set up...
