I have this skimmer.

What my question is I am about to change tanks and I want this skimmer to sit under the stand (out of site) But my sump is 18 inches tall. The return from the skimmer is not 18 inches tall, can I just add some pipe and make a 90 degree up and over the sump. ( I think it will have to come up about 6 inches) Or will this make the skimmer not work? Right now I have the skimmer sitting outside the stand (my old tank) on a small stand I built to make it high enough to go over the sump. (this makes it to tall for my new stand if I use the same set up as I have now)
