Snail abandoned shell - freestylin

So wierd, one of my Astrea snails left his/her shell the other day - saw him just cruising the glass with no shell...odd. What would make them do that, maybe he fell off a rock and his shell was turned upside down? i guess rather than dying upside down he just jumped ship? maybe? IDK...wierd

Wow! I'm not sure that is possible. Could it be a coincidence that the astrea died and about that time you had a stomatella snail go by. They look shellless but have a bit of a covering on their back.

Yeah, i wasnt sure it was possible either but I have never purchased any Stomatella's but did just google it and a couple of the photos looked similar to what I see....hmmm where did it come from? maybe hitchhiked from my recent clam purchase from Simon? I doubt it but anythign is possible i guess

Yeah, I'm 99% positive that a snail can't live w/o a shell. I've had my tank set up for over six years and just noticed stomatellas last month. I'd bet that's what it is.

Stomatellas are common hitchhikers and are beneficial. I probably have a hundred of them in my 120G and they usually come out at night but sometimes I'll see them in the daytime.

I agree, probably a stomatella. I've never purchased them either but have had several hitchhike in on rock or corals I've bought.
