The White looking stuff? I do not know what that is but I get it from time to time. What kind of flow do you have in there? If I increase flow or change position of power heads I get rid of it....temporarily. I will be following...

My only guess is sargassum

Edit: Nevermind got to looking around and it could only be that if it were in a very juvenile form or something.

Yes its a white colored "fuzz" EVERYWHERE... I did recently remove one powerhead so my tank is probably under circulated. What type of powerhead setup would be ideal for a 40g breeder?

Totally depends on the coral inhabitants, from what I can see in there.....gorgonia, palys, star polyps..I would say multiple 2-3 equal to around 800 gph on opposing sides. If you are planning to go with corals such as sps you will want at least 5 times that but be cautious of blowing the skin off your softies. Are you running a skimmer?

Wow that explains alot... I guess I never gave much thought to the water flow. I have a mixture of SPS and LPS... but have ONE circulation fan which is pretty weak... I tried several different ways of incorporating two, more powerful pumps, but could not keep my sand in one place...

And yes I am using in sump skimmer

Place sps high and softies low, powerheads high (ok to be somewhat direct at sps) Add one that will flow behind rock as well just to keep nutrients from building up back there. Keep in mind that if a powerhead is rated for 400gph output that 400 gallons is also passing through as input. did that make sense? lol. A 400 gph is really 800. So being that you arfe running sps I would shoot for around 2000gph.
